Style Guide
It’s an exclamation I hear all the time:
WHAT DO WE WEAR?!
I’m so excited to share some of the tips and tricks that I’ve learned along the way. Read below for all the secrets to styling your session and to see some examples of some of my previous couples.
The First Rule of Fashion
Do what makes you feel comfortable and confident!
The same rule applies for buying things at the store: if you don’t love it at the store, you won’t love it at home. Likewise, If you don’t love it at home, you’re not going to love it in your photos.
Find colors that complement
This couple killed it! The colors of her dress complement his shirt perfectly! The hydrangeas were a super happy coincidence.
Get creative with patterns, textures, and accessories. It’s important that you coordinate with one another, but I suggest not matching too closely.
I love colors and prints that complement one another. Gone are the 90’s days of wearing matching outfits, and I’m certainly not sorry about saying that! Use Pinterest or Google to look up some color pallets and use those to inform your outfits.
Flowing tops, dresses and skirts look great in photos- plus they’re fun to dance around in!
These are some great example of color palettes that can help you and your partner choose what to wear at a session! The idea behind a palette is that any of the colors pair nicely together. Consider looking at different palettes for different times of the year!
I adore the way these two paired the orange of his pants (and squirrel shirt!! So stinking cute!) with the yellow of her top. The bold colors worked so well together and expressed their personality perfectly!
Dress for the season and location
These two had their engagement session in the summer—the perfect opportunity for this gorgeous blue dress!
Alright, y’all. I’m super guilty of this. Rewind several years ago when Schuyler and I got our engagement photos done. We got our photos done in March in the mountains and it was cold. I wanted a summer vibe for our photos and opted for a tank top and skirt. I was freezing and you can totally tell when you look at our photos.
If you want to wear the summery clothes when it’s colder outside, I won’t judge! Just be sure to bring gloves and a jacket to warm up with between shots.
This couple wanted to do their engagement session at home because their relationship, they described, is more casual. I love that their outfits complement their personality!
Outfit Changes
Feel free to change outfits during the session, just remember that it can be difficult to come by a bathroom to change. You may find yourself changing outfits in the car!
Hair and Makeup
Do what makes you feel comfortable! This is a great excuse to get hair and makeup done professionally, but don’t feel like you have to.
The Ring
We want to see that sparkle! Since we will be shooting your ring, it’s a great idea to polish it before the shoot. Simple jewelry cleaner will do the trick. Your hands will be photographed too, so put on your favorite polish, clear coat, or break out your mani set.
The Butterflies in Your Stomach
It’s really okay to be nervous. Our time together is going to be relaxed, easy, and fun. You’ll forget all about any nervousness after you hear the first snap. We will shake out the jitters together! I’m here for YOU. So, if there’s something that we can do to make the day feel better, just let me know.
