A Complete Guide to Bridal Portraits

Y’all I’ve got a confession to make. I always say that I don’t have favorite sessions, but I’m definitely lying. Here’s why: bridal portraits are my absolute favorite. I mean, seriously, it combines all of my favorite things: hanging out with the bride, fluffing wedding dresses, exploring the venue. *chef’s kiss*

While bridal portraits are amazing, planning them can be a bit of a challenge, which is what inspired me to make this guide. There are a lot of moving parts to bridal sessions, so read on to see what needs to happen to make your bridal portraits happen!

The Moving Pieces:

The Dress

Possibly the biggest moving piece and the star of the show. Check with your seamstress/store to see when your dress is going to be ready. We don’t need the dress to be 100% ready, in fact, there may be some things that you notice will need to be adjusted during the bridal portraits.

Pro tip: Most stores/seamstresses will clean your dress after the portraits. We won’t be stomping through mud, by any means, but the dress is white and it’s going to pick things up.

The Venue

Most brides have their bridal portraits done at their venue. Most venues allow brides to visit during the week to get these portraits. Check with your venue to see what their availability is.

Pro Tip: Bringing someone with you during your bridal portraits can be super helpful. They can help you get into your dress and they can help carry your train during the transitions.

Hair and Makeup

Most Hair and Makeup (HAMU) professionals allow brides to get a trial. The bridal portraits are a fantastic time to get that!

Florals

Second, I always recommend that brides try a bouquet, too! It looks great in the shots, plus, you’ll get to see your floral arrangement in person before the big day. Then, afterwards, you’ll have some beautiful decorations for your home.

Pro Tip: If you’ve got clips or other hairpieces that you want to try out, this is the time to do it!

The Photographer

I normally photograph bridal portraits 1.5 + months out from the wedding. This allows for me to edit and return your gallery quickly enough for you to get prints.

Pro Tip: It’s going to be such a fun and relaxed day!

Don’t know how to hold a bouquet? No sweat! I’ll teach you!

Don’t know what to do with your hands? I got you, girl!
